What is the difference between Foxtail & Foxylady seedlings? DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE

Can you tell me if this baby foxy is a full green ? I bought one like that on eBay recently and it will eventually be planted in a shady/partially sunny area of the garden. The collection has a few standard green Foxies, and a Variegated specimen whose crown receives full sun.

• Typically I find the F1 does have the hybrid vigor, except when they are very variegated.
• There are more palms than Foxy Lady.
• That thing is so root bound that you need to do slow drip like they do or just plant it.
• Both are superbly grown, just needs to planted to adapt to So Cal conditions and watering.
• It’s a bad combination for the palm to deal with root trauma and to fight full scorching sun at the same time.
• I never said the palm looked bad I said it was basically bare root and variegated which I specifically said I didn’t want!!!

Note the smooth texture of the seed fiber compared to a course fiber foxtail. I do not grow foxtails, so there could not be a mix up there. I have plenty of foxtails and Veitchia arecina in the yard so maybe it did a cross back with one of them to become fertile? I don’t want to give a utility an excuse to start cutting back other healthy palms in my garden that are even further from the phone lines than this one. Perhaps as a couple of adjacent palms get a little larger I’ll have to be proactive and remove it, along with a -postmortem of what was happening internally at the weeping site.

Hello, I’m a novice collector and bought a 15 gallon foxy lady from a seller in Temecula, CA about 2 and a half weeks ago. In fact, about all the foxyladies that exhibited extreme variegation did not survive.

I am lousy at keeping seedlings alive let alone sargentii seedlings! I am good with the outcome either way, but if you really want to rid yourself of that ‘ugly’ plant,I am ready to adopt. I would LOVE to own that ‘ugly’ palm.
Hot and dry in summer, humid and sticky monsoon season, perfect weather Christmas time One is variegated and the other is not?? Are they famous because they are the first to produce viable seed? Being in tropical Cairns, they were probably seedlings 3 yrs ago.

• The only mature ( and flowering /seeding ) specimens i’m currently familiar with are those in Kopsick’s collection.
• Here is the 5th seed that failed float test.
• I was advised by the seller to apply a kelp extract/ water mix, then heavy water every other day, with superthrive/ water every five days.
• I don’t know the different rates of growth for them in Florida.
• I have 2 that look just like a foxtail.
• I believe most of the time the seeds never germinate but very occasionally they do.
• I can come pick up that palm at your convenience,deliver you $200 cash, plus the 3 Pseudophoenix seedlings in the pic if you would be interested in selling.

I have 3-7g (one slight variegation) I have 3-3g (one slight variegation) I do need to get better on checking my palm talk tho! Purchased several years ago as a seedling from a breeder in Florida. Was it grown from a seed made by nature or by manual cross pollination? Where did that palm originate?
There are no light colored green leaves and zero variegation. That palm is 100% solid dark healthy green. David the light must be playing tricks in the photo, this palm has zero variegation. Full greens do not have any variegation. They can be solid green without any variegation.

Foxy Lady in Trouble!

Yeah I had one sprout a while back but had some irrigation issues to my potted plants in my absence and it ended up drying out and dying. Never noticed seed on the variegated Foxy located in another part of the collection. Floribunda had some f2 foxy ladies a while ago. The one I’m growing in Leucadia is from the same source and purchased about the same time, as this and another “Foxy Lady” I have.
You said, “I marked the spear the day it was delivered, and there has been zero growth.” Another possibility that could be of concern is, if it was pot grown and roots had exited the drain holes and anchored into the ground, they may have been severed when lifting the pot from the ground. Repeat the kelp extract/ water mix in 2 weeks.

I have 2 that look just like a foxtail. I know of 1 other grower in Cape Coral that gets viable seed. Here are a few pics of some of the F2’s that I am growing out to sell. The vast majority of the good looking seed are NOT viable. Sometime even though they are hard, they float.

I marked the spear the day it was delivered, and there has been zero growth (I wouldn’t be concerned with that at this point, except that the leaf has now snapped) Yes the Veitchia can and has been the host, I had one growing at my former residence , it looks like a Veitchia, with yellowish petioles. Foxyladies hold the variegation when mature. Here are a few slightly variegated ones.
These foxy lady palms are thirsty and it’s nearly impossible to overwater them. The foxtails are the ones in community pots, and foxyladies are singles in 1 gal. It PROVES that it is a true foxy lady,as foxtails are almost never variegated. I’ve got several foxtails (probably too many, but it was the first “exotic” tree that I really liked), some common King palms, and some Kentias. Foxy Lady palms are incredibly fast growing palms and I think yours has a fighting chance if you get it in the ground ASAP and keep it’s rootball watered. It never ceases to amaze me how little water rootbound palms in pots get, even if you soak them everyday.

Call me anytime to chat about transplanting palms. They say the foxy lady is a rocket but the growth rate appears to be the same as seedlings. The foxtails have been grown in some shade, and the foxyladies have been growing in at least 1/2 day Sun. Yep, I was told it’s the mother plant genes that determine the fruit/seed so you can’t tell an F1 hybrid without growing it! Seed from a foxtail palm will only look like foxtail seeds even if something else is going in the seed. But I have had a foxy lady from came off of one of my foxtails….
As Dean says, if it doesn’t budge after a week or two of this shock, you may have a dead palm and one day the crownshaft will just collapse on you along with any green material that remains. I moved the pot to a shadier spot in my yard and applied copious water this morning, and went home at lunch and gave it another soaking. A plant like this that makes tons of roots hates being in a pot made for Hawaii or FL. The pool fence isn’t nearly high enough for any shade for the entire plant, and it looks like the leaves are getting full sun most of the day, probably with low humidity.
FULL DISCLOSURE…these are not photos of my palms, nor did I take these photos. What’s the difference between the variegated and the green ? There’s been a couple times where large all green forms have been available, but it hasn’t been too often.
